Nearly every aspect of sperm health is influenced by mitochondrial function, from development to motility, which reflects how closely cellular energy production and reproductive function are linked. Mitochondria are essential throughout spermatogenesis, the process of developing and maturing sperm, which requires large amounts of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the cell’s main source of energy, supporting cellular processes involved in sperm development. Research has found that men with higher oxidative stress markers in seminal plasma tend to have lower levels of ubiquinol. Lower seminal ubiquinol levels are associated with suboptimal sperm parameters, including reduced sperm count and motility.6,7
To understand how oxidative stress develops, it helps to look at what happens during normal mitochondrial energy production, because this is where the process begins at a cellular level. ATP is generated within the mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC). However, some electrons escape during transfer and react with oxygen, forming a superoxide, a highly unstable and reactive free radical that is a primary form of reactive oxygen species (ROS).8,9 ROS seek stability by taking electrons from healthy molecules. These interactions can affect cellular structures, including mitochondrial membranes, the ETC, and nuclear and mitochondrial DNA.10,11 Left unchecked, this damage can lead to an increase in ROS within the mitochondria.8
Antioxidants like ubiquinol keep ROS in check by neutralizing free radicals, which plays a part in maintaining cellular integrity and homeostasis. Oxidative stress occurs when there is an imbalance between the production of ROS and the body’s antioxidant defenses. While some ROS are necessary for sperm maturation and signaling, excess ROS from oxidative stress can overwhelm antioxidant defenses and impair sperm function.2
